Don’t automatically match a discount unless it has an “answered” next to it ;)

Your rival’s 40% coupon is Supply. Stop reading it as Demand.

Monday competitor review. Someone shares a screenshot: a big red number on a rival’s homepage. Same as last week. And the week before.

“They’re everywhere with it. Should we match?”

Here’s the trap. The review counts what it sees. If you saw a coupon three times, your competitor posted it three times. That shows how much they’re pushing it. It doesn’t show that anyone wanted it.

Sometimes a promo repeats because it works. Sometimes it repeats because it doesn’t and nobody has a better idea. From the screenshot, you can’t tell.

We see the same pattern in German retail right now. Ahead of Black Friday, the strongest search ads mostly aren’t the ones shouting a price. They show the product, the use, the reason to buy.

Before Black Week, add one column to your competitor review:

Seen
how often the promo shows up.
Answered
how the audience responded.

Don’t automatically match a discount unless it has an “answered” next to it.

When it does, check what actually won: the percentage, or the format around it?

It’s one column, not a new process. Your margin will notice first.
